FTL, LTL and Groupage: Choosing a Road Freight Service

Planning guidance, not transaction approval

Trade, customs and carrier requirements vary by commodity, route and date. Check current official requirements and obtain transaction-specific confirmation before dispatching goods.

Road freight can be structured around the size and urgency of a load. The terms FTL, LTL and groupage describe different ways of using transport capacity.

FTL

Full-truck-load usually means a vehicle is dedicated to one load or customer. It can reduce handling and suit larger or more urgent consignments.

LTL

Less-than-truck-load uses only part of a vehicle. The shipment may share capacity with other freight while moving on a planned route.

Groupage

Groupage often uses a network of depots and consolidation hubs. It can offer economical pallet movements but normally involves more handling stages than dedicated transport.

What to provide

Pallet count, dimensions, weight, stackability, collection/delivery access and requested delivery windows help determine which service is appropriate.
