Project Cargo Planning Checklist for Heavy and Oversized Freight

Planning guidance, not transaction approval

Trade, customs and carrier requirements vary by commodity, route and date. Check current official requirements and obtain transaction-specific confirmation before dispatching goods.

Heavy and oversized cargo often needs more planning than a standard pallet or container movement. Early technical information can make the difference between a workable route and a late-stage redesign.

Dimensions and gross weight

Provide precise overall dimensions and verified gross weight. Where relevant, centre of gravity and lifting points should also be documented.

Loading and unloading

Clarify whether cranes, forklifts, skates, ramps or specialist lifting equipment are required at either end.

Access and route restrictions

Site access, height restrictions, turning space, road permits and route surveys can affect equipment selection and timing.

Photographs and drawings

Clear images and technical drawings help specialist providers understand the cargo before equipment is committed.

Plan permits early

Oversized movements can require permissions, escorts or specialist planning, so unrealistic last-minute deadlines should be avoided.
